Blankenberge is a coastal town on the North Sea, in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. Blankenberge has developed around fishing and trade, but is today also a tourist destination on the coast. In the center there is a promenade, a railway station and a marina. Along the coast is a long sandy beach and a pier that extends into the sea. In Blankenberge there are residential buildings, hotels, restaurants and shops. Blankenberge is also connected to other coastal towns by road, rail and the coastal tram Kusttram.
The beach in Blankenberge consists of a wide sandy beach that changes slightly with the tide. At low tide, the sand surface becomes larger and firmer, and people often walk along the water line or sit further out on the beach. When the water rises, the beach surface shrinks and the waves reach closer to the promenade. Behind Blankenberge beach is a long row of buildings with homes, hotels and restaurants. A wooden pier, Belgium Pier, juts out into the sea and is used both as a viewpoint and a walkway over the water. Belgium Pier visually divides the shoreline and is a clear feature when you see the beach from the promenade.
Blankenberge beach is used for various everyday activities. During the warmer months, people bathe in the sea, sit in rented beach chairs or build sandcastles. There are also marked areas for swimming and sometimes nets for beach volleyball. During cooler periods, Blankenberge beach is more peaceful, and is mostly used for walking or looking out over the sea. Sand dunes and basic beach infrastructure, such as lifeguard posts and temporary kiosks during the season, occur on some parts of the beach. The area is easily accessible on foot from the center of Blankenberge and is close to Blankenberge train station and harbor.
