Lokeren is a city with medieval roots
Lokeren is a city in the province of East Flanders in Belgium, located between Ghent and Antwerp. Lokeren is located on the Durme River and has developed around this waterway, which has historically been important for trade and local industry. The municipality of Lokeren includes the city center as well as the parts of Daknam and Eksaarde.
Lokeren has medieval roots and grew during the 17th and 18th centuries through textile production, especially linen and later hat making. During the 19th century, Lokeren became known for its hair felt industry, and this activity contributed to population growth and economic development. Traces of this period can be seen in older industrial buildings and in Lokeren's architecture. In the center is the market square, Markt, which serves as a gathering place with municipal buildings, church, shops and restaurants. The Catholic Sint-Laurentius Church is a clear feature of the cityscape. Lokeren also has parks and green areas, including along the Durme, which are used for walking and recreation.
Lokeren is known for the annual music festival Lokerse Feesten, which is held during the summer and attracts both national and international artists. Lokeren also has an active community life and local traditions linked to the Waasland region. Communications are well developed with rail and road connections that connect the city with other parts of Flanders. Lokeren today functions both as a residential area for commuters and as a local service area for the surrounding areas.
