Nieuwpoort is a city and municipality on the North Sea coast in the province of West Flanders in Belgium. Nieuwpoort is located at the mouth of the IJzer River, where the river flows into the North Sea. The location by both the river and the sea has influenced Nieuwpoort's development and functions. The municipality of Nieuwpoort consists of two main parts. Nieuwpoort-Stad is located a few kilometers inland and constitutes the historic city center with squares, churches and older buildings. On the coast is Nieuwpoort-Bad, which is the part of the municipality that focuses on beach life, accommodation for visitors and activities related to tourism.

Nieuwpoort also has a port with both fishing activities and a marina for pleasure boats. The port area and canals connect Nieuwpoort to the Belgian network of inland waterways. The Belgian coastal railway also runs along the coast, connecting towns along the North Sea coast.

Nieuwpoort's location on the IJzer River has had historical significance. During the Battle of Nieuwpoort during the Dutch War of Independence, battles were fought in the area. During World War I, the locks on the IJzer played a role when low-lying areas were flooded in connection with the defense of the Belgian front.

Today, Nieuwpoort functions as both a residential area, a port city and a coastal resort on the North Sea.
