Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana

Copacabana - one of the most iconic places in Rio de Janeiro
Copacabana Beach stretches for about 4 kilometers along the Atlantic coast, shaped like a slightly curved crescent. It has light, fine-grained sand and is surrounded by ocean-blue water and green hills in the background. The wide promenade – Avenida Atlântica – runs the entire length of the beach and is lined with palm trees, bars, hotels and restaurants. The promenade has a famous wave-shaped black and white mosaic pattern, created by Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. The neighborhoods behind the beach are densely built and vibrant. Here you can find everything from luxury hotels to small local shops, food stalls and housing. Copacabana is a center for social life, music and sports. You can see people playing soccer or volleyball on the beach, jogging along the promenade, or simply relaxing under a parasol with a coconut or a caipirinha (Brazil's national drink) in hand. Every year on New Year's Eve (Reveillon), millions of people dressed in white gather on the beach to celebrate the new year with fireworks, music and flower offerings to the goddess of the sea, Yemanjá – a tradition with roots in Afro-Brazilian religion.
