Saint-Malo is a historic city on the north coast of Brittany in northwestern France, situated on the English Channel. Surrounded by strong city walls and a dramatic tidal landscape, Saint-Malo is a place where history, sea and city life meet. Saint-Malo is known for its maritime traditions, its ancient pirates and its role as an important stronghold for both trade and defense. The old city center, Intra-Muros, is located inside the massive granite walls that rise directly on the sea. Here, narrow cobblestone streets are crowded with restaurants, shops and cafes, surrounded by historic buildings that have been recreated after the destruction of World War II. Walking along the city walls offers panoramic views of the sea, the harbor and the nearby islands, including Fort National – an old fortress that becomes accessible at low tide.
The port of Saint-Malo is an important part of the city's history and economy. The port of Saint-Malo has been used since the Middle Ages for trade, fishing and shipping, and was long a base for privateers who sailed in the king's service. Today, the port of Saint-Malo consists of several parts with functions for freight and ferry traffic, fishing, a marina for pleasure boats and cruise ships. From Saint-Malo there are regular ferry connections to, among others, Great Britain and the Channel Islands, and the port is also important for tourism and sailing.
Every four years, the transatlantic sailing race La Route du Rhum is organized, which runs from Saint-Malo in France to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. La Route du Rhum is sailed solo, without a crew. La Route du Rhum has been conducted since 1978 and largely follows the classic trade route across the Atlantic.
