Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Greenland is mostly covered by ice sheet, while the population mainly lives along the coasts. The economy is based on fishing, the public sector and tourism. The largest city and administrative capital is Nuuk. Greenland has its own government and is responsible for most domestic issues, while Denmark handles foreign and security policy.
Kangerlussuaq is a small town in western Greenland, located at the heart of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord. Kangerlussuaq grew up around a former American military base and has since served as an important transportation hub. Kangerlussuaq has the longest runway in Greenland and has long been a central hub for air traffic. The business community is characterized by aviation, service, research and tourism, and Kangerlussuaq is often used as a starting point for trips to the ice sheet.
Kangerlussuaq Airport West is located in western Greenland at the end of Søndre Strømfjord, near the community of Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq Airport was built during World War II by the United States under the name Bluie West 8 and was later used as a military base before being converted to civilian operation in the 1990s. Kangerlussuaq Airport has a long runway that has enabled traffic with larger aircraft and has therefore served as a hub for both domestic flights and international connections. As new airports are built in other parts of Greenland, the role of Kangerlussuaq Airport has changed, but it is still used for scheduled traffic, charter flights, military operations and as an alternative airport in difficult weather conditions.
