Kappa - an iconic suspension bridge located in scenic Kamikochi
The Kappa Bridge (河童橋, Kappabashi) is an iconic suspension bridge located in Kamikochi, a scenic valley in the Japanese Alps in Nagano Prefecture. The bridge spans the crystal-clear Azusa River and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including the Hotaka Mountains and the active Yakedake volcano. Measuring 36.6 meters long and 3.1 meters wide, the Kappa Bridge is made of larch and has been a centerpiece of Kamikochi since 1891. The area around the bridge is rich in natural beauty. Kesho-yanagi (Japanese willow trees) and Japanese larch grow along the riverbanks, providing a picturesque backdrop to the clear river water. In the fall, the colorful autumn leaves are reflected in the water, creating a magical atmosphere. From the Kappa Bridge, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Hotaka Mountains and the Dakesawa Valley as they look upstream. Downstream, the smoking peak of Yakedake can be seen, a reminder of the area's volcanic activity. The bridge is a popular photo opportunity, especially during the changing seasons when the landscape changes. The Kappa Bridge is located just 300 meters from Kamikochi Bus Terminal, making it easily accessible for visitors. The area around the bridge is lively, with several hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops. To preserve the natural environment, the area is car-free, and visitors are encouraged to use public transportation or walk to get there.
