De Dam – the square in the heart of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of Europe's most well-known and visited cities. With its beautiful canals, historic buildings, bicycles everywhere and rich cultural life, Amsterdam has become a symbol of both Dutch history and modern lifestyle. Amsterdam is located in the western part of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland, and has around 900,000 inhabitants. Amsterdam is famous for its unique canal system, often called the "Venice of the North". The canals were built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and surround the city center in concentric rings.

De Dam, often simply called "Dam", is the most central and historically significant square in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. The square is located just a few minutes' walk from Central Station and serves as a natural gathering point for both tourists and locals. The name "Dam" comes from the dam that was built in the Amstel River in the 13th century to protect the growing settlement from flooding. It was around this dam that the city of Amsterdam grew. The square originally served as a marketplace and trading place for fishermen and merchants.
