Söderköping - Sweden
Söderköping is an urban area in Östergötland and the central town of Söderköping Municipality, and is located approximately 16 km south of Norrköping. Söderköping is a charming small town idyll with the Göta Canal running through the city, surrounded by a vibrant countryside, nature experiences and the beautiful Sankt Anna archipelago. The Göta Canal stretches from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem on Slätbaken. The Göta Canal is 190 km long with 58 locks. Of the route, 87 km was dug, by hand, by approximately 58,000 Swedish soldiers. Söderköping has a long and interesting history. At the intersection of the Storån River, which flows into the Baltic Sea, and the road to Kalmar, a large city grew up during the early Middle Ages. Söderköping became one of the country's most important port cities during the Middle Ages. Stegeborg Castle was an effective lock and protection for the sea route. This provided an opportunity to control trade until the 18th century.
