Luisenplatz - the central square in Darmstadt and the city's most important hub for both traffic, shopping and city life
Darmstadt is located in the German state of Hesse, with around 160,000 inhabitants. Darmstadt is located south of Frankfurt am Main and is known for its role in research, technology and the arts. Darmstadt is officially recognised as a “Wissenschaftsstadt”, city of science, due to its strong connection to research and technology. It is home to the highly regarded Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD), where engineers and researchers are trained and develop the technology of the future. But Darmstadt is not only a city of technology, it is also a place with a rich cultural and artistic heritage. Luisenplatz is the central square in Darmstadt and the city’s most important hub for both traffic, shopping and city life. It is named after Grand Duchess Luise von Hesse-Darmstadt, wife of Ludwig I. Today, the square is a modern place with a historical atmosphere – surrounded by shops, cafés, public buildings and tram lines. Langer Ludwig is the monumental column in the middle of the square and visible in the camera image. The column was erected in 1841, is 39 meters high and is topped by a statue of Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse-Darmstadt.
