Clearwater is located on the west coast of Florida in Pinellas County, on the Gulf of Mexico. Clearwater is part of the Tampa Bay area and has a population of about 120,000. Tampa is about 25 miles (40 km) to the east, St. Petersburg is across the bay to the south, about 22 miles (35 km). A little further away is Orlando, about 105 miles (170 km) northeast of Clearwater. Further south is Miami, about 275 miles (440 km) from Clearwater, which is about a four to five hour drive. Along the way, you pass other well-known coastal cities such as Naples (about 146 miles (235 km)) and Fort Myers. Fort Lauderdale is also within a five-hour drive, just over 255 miles (410 km). Clearwater is home to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, known for its efforts to rescue and rehabilitate marine animals. The aquarium serves as both a research center and a tourist destination. Clearwater's downtown is under development and houses shops, restaurants, and a community center. Coachman Park, a venue for concerts and events overlooking the water, is also located here. Clearwater's sports and outdoor life is active, with opportunities for sailing, kayaking, fishing and cycling along coastal trails.
