Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is located between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Greenland is mostly covered by ice sheet, while the population mainly lives along the coasts. The economy is based on fishing, the public sector and tourism. The largest city and administrative capital is Nuuk. Greenland has its own government and is responsible for most domestic issues, while Denmark handles foreign and security policy.
Qaarsut Airport is a public airport located in the village of Qaarsut on the Nuussuaq Peninsula in northwestern Greenland. Qaarsut Airport is located west of the village itself and serves as a regional airport with a gravel runway that can accommodate short take-off/short landing aircraft all year round. Qaarsut Airport is used for scheduled traffic by Air Greenland and connects Qaarsut with other locations in Greenland, such as Uummannaq and Ilulissat. The terminal building has simple functions for departures and arrivals and there is a road between Qaarsut Airport and the village. Qaarsut Airport was opened in the late 1990s as a solution to serve the Uummannaq area, which lacked sufficient space for a runway.
