Deerfield Beach was named in the early 1900s for its abundance of deer. Deerfield became a municipality in 1925 and was given its current name, Deerfield Beach, in 1939. The coastline is central to Deerfield Beach's identity, with a long fishing pier and several parks. Quiet Waters Park is a major recreational area with water activities and bike trails. The city center is home to historic buildings such as the Butler House and a local museum. Deerfield Beach covers just over 16 square miles (42 square kilometers), a small portion of which is water.
