Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States and consists of a chain of volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 3,700 kilometers southwest of the mainland United States. Hawaii consists of eight major islands, the most famous of which are Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi (also known as the Big Island), Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi. The capital is Honolulu, located on the island of Oʻahu, which is also the most populous island. Hawaii is unique both geographically and culturally.
Maui - the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, known for its dramatic scenery, varied climate and rich cultural history. Nicknamed “The Valley Isle”, the island is made up of two volcanic mountain ranges – Haleakalā to the east and the West Maui Mountains to the west – connected by a low-lying valley, giving the island its characteristic shape. Maui is a popular destination thanks to its long beaches, lush rainforests and volcanic landscapes. One of the most iconic experiences is watching the sunrise from Haleakalā Crater, a moon-like landscape over 3,000 metres above sea level. In contrast, the famous Road to Hāna coastal drive offers winding roads through rainforest, past waterfalls and black lava beaches. During the winter months, Maui is one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales, which migrate to the warm waters around the island.
Lahaina/Lāhainā - a historic town on West Maui, Hawaii, known for its rich culture, charming small-town feel, and important role in Hawaii's history. During the 19th century, Lāhainā was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom and a bustling port city during the whaling era. Lahaina is famous for its Front Street, filled with art galleries, shops, and restaurants, as well as its large banyan tree, one of the largest in the United States, planted in 1873. Lahaina is also a popular center for whale watching during the winter months. In August 2023, Lahaina was hit by a devastating fire, which destroyed much of the historic downtown area. Reconstruction efforts are underway, and the town remains an important symbol of Hawaii's heritage and community.
Kaanapali Beach/Kāʻanapali Beach - one of the most famous and award-winning beaches in the United States, located on the west side of Maui. With its long stretch of golden sand, crystal-clear waters and beautiful views of the neighboring islands of Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi, the beach is a popular destination for both relaxation and water sports. Kāʻanapali Beach stretches for approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) along the Kāʻanapali Resort area, which was formerly royal land and was Hawaii's first planned vacation resort when it was developed in the 1960s. It is home to a number of luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants and shops, and the beach is directly accessible from many of them via the well-known Kāʻanapali Beachwalk, a boardwalk that runs the entire length of the coast. A special feature of the beach is Puʻu Kekaʻa, or "Black Rock" - a lava rock at the north end of the beach. According to Hawaiian mythology, this is a spiritual place where souls are said to travel to the afterlife. Today, Black Rock is also a popular spot for snorkeling thanks to the rich marine life, as well as for cliff diving, especially in conjunction with the daily traditional ceremony where a diver lights torches at sunset and jumps off the cliff.
