The Bay Bridge is one of the busiest bridges in the United States

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge is one of the most important and busiest bridges in the United States, serving as a central link across San Francisco Bay. The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge connects the cities of San Francisco and Oakland and is a crucial part of the region's infrastructure.

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936, the same decade that the more famous Golden Gate Bridge was completed. Unlike the Golden Gate Bridge, which is known primarily for its appearance, the Bay Bridge is primarily significant for its function – it is used daily by hundreds of thousands of commuters.

The structure is divided into two main sections that meet at Yerba Buena Island. The western section, between San Francisco and the island, is a suspension bridge, while the eastern section, which extends to Oakland, was originally a truss bridge. After the massive Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the eastern section was so severely damaged that it was later replaced by a modern, earthquake-resistant structure that opened in 2013.

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge is not only a major transportation route for automobiles and public transportation, but also a technological landmark that reflects the advancements in bridge construction and engineering over nearly a century. It plays a critical role in the economy and daily life of the entire Bay Area and is one of the most iconic infrastructures in the region.
