San Diego is located in Southern California near the border with Mexico. San Diego is built around San Diego Bay and has a coastline on the Pacific Ocean. San Diego was founded as a Spanish settlement in the 18th century and later developed under Mexican and then American rule. Today, San Diego is a major city with port activities, a military presence and tourism. It is home to universities, residential areas and various types of businesses. The climate is mild and influenced by the sea. San Diego also has parks, beaches and areas with historic buildings from the early colonial period.
Harbor Island is located in San Diego, on the western side of San Diego Bay. Harbor Island is man-made and was built in the 1960s in conjunction with the development of San Diego International Airport, which is located right next door. Harbor Island stretches as a narrow strip of land parallel to the airport's runways. Along the eastern side of Harbor Island are hotels, marinas and restaurants, while the western side faces the bay and has walking and cycling paths. Here there are parks, open grassy areas and places to sit and look out over the water. From Harbor Island, you can see both the city center and incoming aircraft, making the area a place where different parts of the city's infrastructure meet. In the southern part is Spanish Landing Park, a park area with historical connections to the early European expeditions along the California coast. The name refers to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who landed in the area in the 16th century.
Harbor Island is used by both visitors and locals. In addition to hotels and restaurants, there are marinas where private boats are moored. Harbor Island also has parking lots and access to roads that lead further into central San Diego.
