In the Livigno Valley, the landscape changes with the seasons

The Livigno Valley is located in the Italian Alps, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The Livigno Valley belongs to the province of Sondrio and is close to the border with Switzerland. The Livigno Valley is surrounded by high mountains, wooded slopes and open alpine meadows. Here the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, from snow-capped mountains and ski slopes in winter to green valleys and hiking trails in summer.

In the Livigno Valley lies Livigno, a town at approximately 1,816 meters above sea level that stretches for approximately 15 kilometers along the valley. The settlement follows the shape of the valley, with residential buildings, hotels, restaurants and shops along the road through the community. Livigno is known as a winter sports resort with downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and other activities on snow. During the summer, the area attracts visitors who want to hike, mountain bike or explore the mountain environment on foot. The high altitude affects the climate, with long and cold winters and short and relatively cool summers.

San Rocco is an area of Livigno, located in the southern part of the resort. From here you have views of parts of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Nearby is the Mottolino ski area, which has lifts and slopes for downhill skiing. San Rocco also has connections to cross-country skiing trails, making it part of Livigno's winter sports environment. During the summer, the trails and mountain roads are used for walking and cycling.

The Livigno Valley also has an interesting geographical feature. The Aqua Granda stream flows through the area, which continues to the Spöl River and then to the Inn River. The Inn flows into the Danube, which flows on to the Black Sea. The water from the Livigno Valley therefore belongs to a different drainage basin than large parts of Italy, where the rivers usually flow towards the Mediterranean or the Adriatic Sea.

Valtellina is the larger valley region where Livigno is located, in the province of Sondrio. Valtellina stretches through the central Alps and is known for its mountain villages, vineyards, local food traditions and opportunities for outdoor activities. The landscape varies from high alpine areas to wider valleys with agriculture and settlements. Valtellina also has a long tradition of livestock farming and cheese making, as well as regional dishes such as pizzoccheri, a pasta dish made with buckwheat, potatoes, cabbage and cheese. The Livigno Valley and San Rocco thus combine a natural alpine landscape with a community where tourism and local traditions play an important role. The Livigno Valley and San Rocco are visited throughout the year, but the activities vary with the season: winter is characterized by skiing and snow sports, while summer offers the opportunity to discover the mountains, the nature of the valley and the smaller communities of Valtellina.
