Aosta, Aosta Valley - Italy

The live camera is located in central Aosta and faces north. You can see, among other things, the bell tower belonging to the church of Sankt Orso with its monastery and in the background the alpine peaks of Grand Combin and Becca di Viou. The webcam is located next to the hotel Aosta Maison Soleil.
In Aosta, the Roman heritage is noticeable in the cityscape
Aosta is located in the northwestern part of Italy, close to the borders with both France and Switzerland. Aosta is the capital of the Aosta Valley region and is located in a wide valley surrounded by high Alpine mountains. Several of the Alps' most famous peaks, including Mont Blanc, are within relatively short distance.
Aosta was founded by the Romans in 25 BC under the name Augusta Praetoria. The Roman legacy is still visible in the cityscape through remains such as city walls, gates, bridges and a theatre. At the same time, the centre is characterised by medieval buildings, churches and squares that were added in later centuries. The city centre is relatively compact, with narrow streets and buildings that reflect both Italian and Franco-Alpine influences.
The region is officially bilingual, with both Italian and French used in public affairs. The local culture and food also bear traces of the contacts across the Alps. Cheeses, cold cuts and dishes based on local produce feature prominently in the regional cuisine.
Aosta also serves as a regional center for commerce, education, and administration. For many visitors, Aosta is a starting point for hiking, skiing, and other mountain activities, but it also has its own everyday character that is different from the more pure tourist resorts in the area. The combination of historical environments, proximity to the mountains, and bilingual culture give the city a distinctive character that is typical of the Aosta Valley.
The webcam is presented by Massimo Faure Ragani.
