Orvieto Cathedral houses works of art from different centuries
Orvieto is a city in the Umbria region of central Italy. Built on a high plateau of volcanic tuff, Orvieto rises above the surrounding landscape. Orvieto dates back to Etruscan times and later developed during Roman and medieval times. The narrow streets, city walls and historic buildings bear witness to this long history.
In the center of Orvieto is the Piazza Duomo. Piazza Duomo serves as a gathering place and is surrounded by buildings from different eras. Here, among other things, are the former papal residence, Palazzo Soliano, and several cafes and restaurants. Piazza Duomo is used by both residents and visitors and is a place where religious celebrations, cultural events and everyday life meet.
On one side of Piazza Duomo stands Orvieto Cathedral, whose construction began in 1290 on the orders of Pope Nicholas IV. Orvieto Cathedral is built in Gothic style with elements of Romanesque traditions. The facade is covered in mosaics, sculptures and reliefs, while the interior contains paintings, chapels and works of art from different centuries. One of the most famous is the San Brizio Chapel with frescoes by Luca Signorelli. Orvieto Cathedral is still an active parish church and is at the same time an important cultural-historical monument in Orvieto.
