Piazza del Popolo is surrounded by Todi's most important historic buildings
Todi is a town in the Italian region of Umbria, located on a hill above the valley of the Tiber River. Todi has roots from Etruscan and Roman times, but its current character is mainly characterized by the Middle Ages. Within the city walls are narrow streets, stone buildings and several churches and public buildings that reflect Todi's historical development over the centuries.
In the centre of Todi is Piazza del Popolo, which has served as a central meeting place for commerce, administration and religious activities since the Middle Ages. The Piazza del Popolo is built on an elevated site and is surrounded by some of Todi's most important historical buildings, including the Palazzo del Popolo, the Palazzo del Capitano, the Palazzo dei Priori and the Todi Cathedral. Together, they form a coherent urban space that shows how Todi's political and religious life was organised in the Middle Ages. Today, Todi is a smaller town where residents and visitors use Piazza del Popolo and the surrounding streets for everyday activities, cultural events and local gatherings. Todi's elevated position offers views of the Umbrian countryside with farmland, hills and smaller communities surrounding the town.
The webcam focuses on the Palazzo dei Priori, which was built starting in 1347. The Palazzo dei Priori has been the seat of the city government for centuries. The Palazzo dei Priori is characterized by its light stone facade, its Gothic windows and the square tower building. Today, parts of the Palazzo dei Priori are still used for municipal functions.
