Bevagna – a small town on the fertile Umbrian plain
Bevagna is a small town in the Italian region of Umbria, located on the fertile Umbrian plain between Assisi and Foligno. Bevagna has its origins in the Roman settlement of Mevania, which was located on the important Via Flaminia road. During the Middle Ages, Bevagna developed into a fortified town, and the medieval street structure is still evident with narrow alleys, stone houses and city walls that partially surround the historic center. Agriculture, wine and olive growing have long been important industries in the area, and Bevagna remains a local center for the surrounding countryside.
Piazza Silvestri is the central square of Bevagna and was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Piazza Silvestri has an irregular shape that follows the medieval town planning and is surrounded by several buildings of historical importance. Here you will find the Palazzo dei Consoli, which was once the administrative center of the city, as well as the churches of San Michele Arcangelo and San Silvestro, both built in Romanesque style. In the middle of Piazza Silvestri there is a fountain from the late 19th century, on the site of the city's older well. Piazza Silvestri is still used as a natural gathering place for residents and visitors and is one of the main locations for the annual medieval festival Mercato delle Gaite.
