Piazza San Rufino has grown up around the San Rufino Cathedral
Piazza San Rufino is a square in the historic center of Assisi. Piazza San Rufino is located on a hill in the upper part of Assisi and has grown around the San Rufino Cathedral, which is dedicated to the city's patron saint Rufinus. The Romanesque facade of the San Rufino Cathedral from the 12th century dominates the square and gives the place its character.
Piazza San Rufino has long served as a gathering place for religious and civil activities. Several of Assisi's narrow medieval streets meet here, and the surroundings are characterized by stone houses, small shops and residences. In contrast to the parts of the city that mainly revolve around the Basilica of St. Francis, Piazza San Rufino has a more local feel, where visitors and residents move side by side. The place also has a close connection to the city's religious history. According to tradition, both Francis of Assisi and Clare of Assisi were baptized in the Cathedral of San Rufino. Piazza San Rufino thus forms part of the environments associated with the emergence of the Franciscan movements during the Middle Ages.
Today, Piazza San Rufino functions as an open city space where you can stop, admire the architecture of the cathedral and follow life in the old city center. Piazza San Rufino's size is relatively modest, but its location and historical context make it a natural part of a walk through Assisi.
