The Basilica of Saint Francis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Assisi is a historic town in the Umbria region of central Italy. Situated on the slopes of Monte Subasio, Assisi has ancient roots. Assisi is particularly associated with Francis of Assisi, who was born there in the 12th century and founded the Franciscan order.
The Basilica of Saint Francis was built in the 13th century to honor Francis after his canonization. The Basilica of Saint Francis consists of two churches on top of each other – a lower basilica with a more subdued and intimate expression and an upper basilica with brighter and more open rooms. Under the church is the crypt where Francis's tomb is located. The walls and vaults are decorated with extensive frescoes by several medieval artists, including Giotto di Bondone and his workshop. The paintings depict, among other things, the life of Francis, his sermons and his work among people and animals. The Basilica of Saint Francis is an important example of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Italy. The Basilica of Saint Francis and other Franciscan sites in Assisi are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
