The Dolomites are a mountain range in the Italian Alps, mainly in the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige regions. The landscape consists of pale limestone mountains with steep walls, pointed peaks, towers and high mountain plateaus. Between the mountains lie valleys with forests, meadows and small communities. The bedrock was formed from marine sediments and coral reefs that existed in the area during the Triassic period, more than 200 million years ago. Later, erosion, glaciers and other geological processes have shaped the landscape that exists there today. The Dolomites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009 due to both their geological characteristics and their landscape.
In the eastern part of the Dolomites lie the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, in German Drei Zinnen, which means "the three peaks". Tre Cime di Lavaredo is located in the area between Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina and Dobbiaco and is part of the Tre Cime Nature Park. The three peaks are Cima Grande, which reaches 2,999 meters, Cima Ovest at 2,973 meters and Cima Piccola at 2,857 meters. Tre Cime has a clear shape with almost vertical rock walls and has long been a place for both climbing and hiking. The first documented ascent of Cima Grande was made in 1869 by the Austrian alpinist Paul Grohmann together with guides from the area. Today, a hiking trail runs around the three peaks of Tre Cime. It usually starts at Rifugio Auronzo and passes, among others, Rifugio Lavaredo and Rifugio Locatelli before returning to the starting point. The round trip is about ten kilometers long.
The Dolomites and the Tre Cime change character depending on the season and weather. In summer, the valleys are green and the hiking trails are well-used, while in winter, snow covers large parts of the mountain landscape. The light conditions can also change the color of the light limestone during the day, which is part of what has given the Dolomites their distinctive appearance.
