Gemona – the city between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps
Gemona, officially Gemona del Friuli, is a historic town in Friuli Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy, at the foot of the Julian Alps. Gemona has medieval roots and developed through its location on the trade route between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. The old town center includes the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Via Bini with its historic palaces, and Palazzo Elti, which houses the city museum.
Gemona was badly hit by the 1976 earthquake, destroying large parts of the town. The historic buildings were subsequently rebuilt, making the reconstruction an important part of Gemona's modern history and of what is known as the "Modello Friuli". The surroundings are characterised by mountains, the Tagliamento River and opportunities for hiking and cycling.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which can be seen in the picture, began construction around 1290 and was inaugurated in 1337. The building combines Romanesque and Gothic elements and has, among other things, a richly decorated facade with rose windows, sculptures and a medieval portal.
The 1976 earthquake caused extensive damage to the cathedral, including parts of the nave and apse collapsing. Santa Maria Assunta was restored and rebuilt, preserving the historic parts. Traces of the earthquake can still be seen today, including in the slightly shifted columns inside Santa Maria Assunta. The adjacent bell tower, which was built in the 14th century, was rebuilt after the earthquake
