Venice, Campo Santa Maria Formosa - Italy

Campo Santa Maria Formosa – a lively square with history
Campo Santa Maria Formosa is one of Venice's largest and liveliest squares ("campo" means square in Venetian). It is located in the Castello district, a short walk from St. Mark's Square, but has a more local and relaxed atmosphere. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, small shops, cafes and the impressive church of Santa Maria Formosa, which gives the square its name. Santa Maria Formosa is one of Venice's oldest churches. It was founded in the 7th century but was rebuilt in the 15th century in Renaissance style by the architect Mauro Codussi. The church has two different facades – one facing the square and one facing the canal – which is unusual in Venice.
