Cattolica is part of a coherent tourist and coastal landscape
Cattolica is a coastal town in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea and close to the border with the Marche. Cattolica is located in the province of Rimini and has a long beach that stretches along the shallow part of the Adriatic coast. Cattolica is today primarily a seaside resort, but also has a history as a fishing community and port town. Cattolica's development is closely linked to the sea. The old fishing village grew during the 19th and early 20th centuries, at the same time as beach tourism began to gain importance along the Italian Adriatic coast. Today, Cattolica is characterized by hotels, restaurants, shops and beach facilities located close to each other along the coast. The beach is divided into many private and public areas with parasols, sun loungers, changing cabins and services for bathers.
A central part of Cattolica is the port, Porto di Cattolica, which is located on the Tavollo River near the border with the municipality of Gabicce Mare. There are fishing boats, pleasure boats and promenades here. The area around the port differs from the more intensively built-up coastal zone and has a clearer connection to the city's maritime history. Cattolica also has some historical buildings and places that tell the story of the city's older history. In the city center are the church of San Pio V and the Museo della Regina, which is housed in a former pilgrim building. The museum deals with the history, archaeology and traditions of Cattolica, among other things. Another well-known landmark is the La Fontana delle Sirene fountain in Piazza Primo Maggio, near the promenade. A promenade with hotels, restaurants, ice cream parlors and various businesses runs along the sea. During the summer, the area is lively, while the pace is calmer during the other months of the year. Cattolica has a climate that is typical of the northern Italian Adriatic coast, with warm summers and milder winters.
Just south of Cattolica lies Gabicce Mare and then the hilly coastline towards Gabicce Monte and the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo nature reserve. To the north lie Rimini and other seaside resorts along the Adriatic Sea. Cattolica is therefore situated in a position that makes the city part of a coherent tourist and coastal landscape where beaches, smaller ports, historic city centres and hills meet.
