Lago di Piediluco is surrounded by forested hills
Lake Piediluco is located in the southeastern part of the Italian region of Umbria, about 13 kilometers east of the city of Terni and close to the border with Lazio. Lago di Piediluco is a natural lake with an area of about 1.5 square kilometers and is surrounded by wooded hills. Lago di Piediluco is connected to the Velino River and is also influenced by water from the Nera River through a regulated water system. Nearby is the Cascata delle Marmore, a waterfall built by the Romans in the 3rd century BC to divert water from the Velino. To this day, the water flow between Lago di Piediluco and the waterfall is regulated for hydroelectric power and water management.
On the shores of Lago di Piediluco lies Piediluco, a small town whose name means "at the foot of Mount Luco". The settlement climbs the slope with narrow streets and stone houses that largely date back to the Middle Ages. On the heights above the village are the remains of the Rocca di Piediluco, a fortress built to control the area and the roads between Umbria and Lazio. Lago di Piediluco is today used for boating, canoeing, fishing and rowing, and is home to the Italian national rowing team's training facility.
Terni is the capital of the province of the same name and is located between the rivers Nera and Serra. The city was founded by the Umbrian people and later became a Roman city under the name Interamna Nahars , which means "the land between the rivers". During the late 19th and 20th centuries, Terni developed into an industrial and hydroelectric center, partly due to the good opportunities for exploiting the hydroelectric power from the rivers and waterfalls in the area. Today, Terni serves as a regional center for industry, commerce, education and culture and is a natural starting point for visits to both Lago di Piediluco and Cascata delle Marmore.
