Bergamo - a historic city divided into two parts, between the mountains and the plain

Bergamo is a beautiful and historic city in northern Italy, in the Lombardy region, about 60 km northeast of Milan. Bergamo has about 120,000 inhabitants and is located at the foot of the Alps. It is particularly famous for its medieval city center, its mountain views and its unique division into two parts: Città Alta (upper city) and Città Bassa (lower city). Città Alta is the old city center, located on a hill, surrounded by a well-preserved 16th-century city wall built by the Venetians. It has narrow alleys, old buildings, churches and squares. Città Bassa is the more modern part of the city, with shops, housing, offices and modern buildings. It is located below the hill and is more lively and commercial. The two parts are connected by a funicular (funicolare) that provides beautiful views of the city.

Bergamo has many beautiful buildings, such as Piazza Vecchia – the central square of the Città Alta, surrounded by historic palaces. Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore – an impressive church from the 12th century. Cappella Colleoni – a richly decorated Renaissance funerary chapel. A short journey from Bergamo there is nature, hiking trails and ski areas. The area is also famous for the Bergamasca Valley and its nearby small villages and lakes, such as the beautiful Lake Como.
