The Venice Lagoon – a network of tidal channels
The Northern Lagoon of Venice, in Italian Laguna Nord di Venezia , is the northern part of the shallow lagoon that surrounds Venice and separates the city from the Adriatic Sea. The Venice Lagoon consists of a network of tidal channels, small islands, reedbeds, mudflats and shallow waters. The landscape changes with the tides and the seasons, and the interaction between freshwater from the mainland and saltwater from the sea affects both plant and animal life.
The Venetian Lagoon includes the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. Murano is famous for its glassmaking, while Burano is associated with its colorful houses and its history of fishing and lace-making. Torcello has remains from the time when settlements in the Venetian Lagoon grew up, before Venice developed into a larger city. Canals run between the islands, which have long been used for transportation, fishing and connections between communities.
Outside the inhabited islands, wetlands and shallow water areas spread out. These include salt marshes, known as barene , which are regularly flooded at high tide, and mudflats that can emerge when the water level drops. These environments are important for wading birds, ducks and other aquatic animals. The Venice Lagoon also serves as a nursery for several species of fish.
Human activity has long influenced the shape of the Venice Lagoon. Canals have been dug and deepened, rivers have been diverted and water flows have been regulated to enable shipping, fishing and settlement. Today, the area is also affected by rising sea levels, erosion, pollution and changes in natural habitats. Preserving the ecological balance of the Venice Lagoon therefore means taking into account both nature and the people who still live and work there.
The Northern Lagoon is thus both a living cultural landscape and a coherent wetland system, where water levels, vegetation, wildlife and human activity are closely linked. The Northern Lagoon differs from Venice's dense urban environment in that the buildings are sparser in many places and the landscape is dominated by water, small islands and open wetlands.
