San Pellegrino in Alpe – one of the highest resorts in the Apennines
San Pellegrino in Alpe is a mountain village in Garfagnana in northern Tuscany, near the border with Emilia-Romagna. San Pellegrino in Alpe is located on a ridge in the Apennines and has grown up around a medieval sanctuary dedicated to the local saints Pellegrino and Bianco who are said to have lived here in the 7th century. San Pellegrino in Alpe has historically been a resting place for pilgrims and travelers crossing the mountains between Tuscany and the Po Plain. Today, San Pellegrino in Alpe is a small community with a church, museum and views of the surrounding mountain and forest areas. At around 1,525 meters above sea level, San Pellegrino in Alpe is considered one of the highest permanently inhabited towns in the Apennines.
The border between the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna runs right through the Sanctuary of Saints Pellegrino and Bianco. Historically, even some buildings in San Pellegrino in Alpe have been shared between the two regions. Geographically, many people still associate San Pellegrino in Alpe with Tuscany, as the village is located above the Garfagnana Valley in northern Tuscany and is often marketed as a Tuscan destination. At the same time, it is also part of the cultural heritage of Emilia-Romagna.
The area is popular for hiking, mountain biking and nature tourism.
