Sweden
Sweden is located in Northern Europe on the eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The area of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland is called the Nordic Region. Sweden is a large and elongated country. It is 1,600 kilometers from north to south and 500 kilometers from west to east. Sweden shares a land border with Norway in the west and with Finland in the northeast. Sweden also has a coast towards the Nordic neighbors Denmark, Norway, Åland and Finland. Sweden is historically divided into the three regions of Svealand, Götaland and Norrland. Lakes and large rivers make up almost ten percent of the area of Sweden. The country also has enormous coniferous forest areas, but despite this, 27,000 km² of the country's area is arable land. Sweden's climate reflects the country's geography. Large parts of the country have a temperate climate, but the northernmost mountains have a subarctic climate. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy. King Carl XVI Gustaf has no real political power, and the Riksdag is the country's highest authority. Sweden is a member of the EU, but has retained the krona as its currency. Sweden is also a member of NATO. Sweden is the most populous country in the Nordic region with 10.5 million inhabitants. Nearly 2.5 million of them live in and around Stockholm. The northern part of the country is sparsely populated.
